We’re in the Home Stretch Now!
Congratulations on making it through the school year so far! This year has been strenuous on most students, but the end is in sight. The last nine weeks is a crucial marking period for any and all students. It’s a time for maintaining their performance in school, both in engagement in the classroom and submitting good quality work that will get good grades.
However, the last nine weeks are a notorious time for students to lose motivation. In the eyes of the student, the end of the school year is practically here, so, therefore, there’s no need to put in any effort. This mentality results in a decline in academic performances and contributes to many students finishing the year on a weak note. Here are some ways to keep your students motivated in school.
Encourage, Encourage, Encourage!
One of the first things is to keep encouraging them. Encouragement will often motivate students a lot more to complete their work. A way to instill this is to be familiar with what is going on with their classes. Knowing what assignments they have due and when the upcoming tests are can help with encouragement by gently checking in on your students and asking how they’re doing with their work.
Positive Reinforcement Wins
Another thing that helps with motivation is positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is the act of rewarding positive behavior, like getting a good grade on a test, to encourage it to happen again in the future. The rewards don’t necessarily need to be expensive or anything of the sort; it can be as simple as a high five or extra privileges.
One big example of positive reinforcement is praise. Praising efforts, not results, will benefit a student‘s learning process by encouraging the process to try their best, no matter their results. It instills ideals of dedication and perseverance, and those skills will show themselves in the good results earned.
